In an emergency, follow instructions received from authorities that arrive on the scene. Three important things to remember are:

  • Stay Calm
  • Be Patient
  • Think before you act

Conditions may arise where you are ordered to evacuate your home. It makes sense to have a plan in place to know how and where to gather your family and where you will go. It is prudent to have several different destinations (in different directions) so that you have options in an emergency. If you are evacuating, take your pets with you, but keep in mind that if you go to a shelter, they may not be allowed inside. Wear protective clothing and sturdy shoes. Lock up your home when you leave. Post a note on the front door, stating when you left and where you're going.

Ask an out of state friend or family member to be your family contact. Each member of your household must know the number!

If there has been a large scale emergency situation (such as an earthquake), do not evacuate unless it is necessary. Unnecessary traffic can impede the response of emergency vehicles. Listen to the radio and follow the instructions of local emergency officials.

In a crisis, we can work together as a community. It is important to have assignments made to check on immediate neighbors and to ensure that individual household needs are met.

Assistance must be provided to physically or emotionally disabled, children, and elderly.

Plan an orderly evacuation. Post a list if time and space allows. You can go through your home room by room and make a list of items that you would want to take with you if you are able to. Basically, if you can buy another one, don't bother taking it. Things such as: photos, genealogy, heirlooms, collections are what you should consider.
